NCPCR expresses concern at violation of child rights
Naharlagun, May 10: National Commission for Child Right Protection (NCPCR) Chairperson Prof. Shanta Sinha expressed concern over child marriage still prevalent in some areas of the state.
“We must not tolerate violence on our girl child through the social evil of child
marriage as it is also violation of Child Rights and we must sustain our fight and
take proactive steps,” Prof Sinha, who arrived here yesterday to assess and take
up child rights issue, said in a meeting with the In Charge Chief Secretary and
Commissioner Education Ganesh Koyu and other senior Govt. officers at CS Conference
Hall, at Banquet hall here today. She said, “We need to carry forward our fight against
such evil practices by creating awareness and ensuring education to girl child and

Disturbing prevalence of child marriages in Arunachal
28 cases settled by APSCW

ITANAGAR, May 10: Since September last year, the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has settled/disposed off a record 28 cases.
Alarmingly, most of the cases pertains to child and forced marriages. Of the seven cases of child and forced marriages recorded since September last year, Kurung Kumey district tops the dubious list while Papum Pare and Lower Subansiri have one case each.
The massive problem faced by the Commission headed by Gumri Ringu, is the rehabilitation of these young girls who often are abandoned by their families and face the lifelong threat of being assaulted by the families of perpetrators of child marriages. The state has just one functional shelter home run by Oju Mission. The shelter home also offers vocational training course for the girls to secure their future.
Some of the victims of child marriages are as young as eleven, which amply imply that a policy needs to be in place so that these children at least have access to education and other facilities so that they have a normal childhood.
One more disturbing aspect is the cases pertaining to Puroiks, a community who were forced as bonded labours. Though they were freed from bondage constitutionally, even today the community is faced with exploitations including working as unpaid labourers of their old masters. Many of the girls are sexually abused.
The Commission is grappling with ways to rehabilitate them as most of the girls have ended up going back to the families for whom they work for.
Others that have come to the Commission include domestic violence, polygamy and maintenances cases.

ITANAGAR, May 10: Dr Radhe Talo, the lone Arunachalee to crack the UPSC Examination 2011 has credited hard work for his success. A graduate from JIPMER Pondicherry, he is one among the 910 candidates recommended for appointment to the IAS, IFS, IPS, IRS and other Central Services.
When asked during a brief interaction with this daily, he said that hard work paved way for his success.
A product of VKV Seijosa and Balijan and RKM Deomali, Dr Talo topped the State Joint Entrance Examination in 2003 by securing first in PCM category and third in PCB.
Son of Late Radhe Gyute and Radhe Yapa of Tajang Village of Lower Subansiri, Dr Talo lost his father when he was just six months old. Because of his persistent hard work and support from his family, he has achieved what many young people of dream of. Right from school days, he had dreams of cracking UPSC examinations and started preparation for the examination, considered the most prestigious in the country.
He succeeded in his second attempt.
This year, more than 2, 43,003 candidates appeared for the preliminary examination.

‘Sharing a cup of tea mission’ launched
Pasighat, May 10: To encourage tea cultivation in the state, the department of trade and commerce today launched a pilot project titled “Sharing a cup of tea mission” for the small and marginal tea growers here today.
This scheme is being implemented for the first time in the state specifically engineered to assist financial assistance in the form of supplying tea saplings to small and marginal tea farmers. “Tea cultivation can provide economic independence to the rural folks if taken up seriously and with dedication, East Siang deputy commissioner Talem Tapok said while launching the project today.

BJP accuses govt of failing to deliver
Itanagar, May 10: The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has severely criticized the ruling Congress Govt in the state for failing to deliver its citizens good governance in all fronts.
Raising several serious issues, including the reported precarious financial position, law and order situation, boundary problems etc. in its extended state office bearers meeting here yesterday, BJP claimed the state govt has totally failed to address the grievances of its people. Claiming total breakdown of law and order, the party alleged that the Govt was not giving proper attention towards the grave situation. Condemning the act of granting bail, the AAPSU said “the recent development has once again amply reflected the dismal state of affairs in the judiciary system of the state whereby the criminals and perpetrators of heinous crimes are having a free run with full impunity.” The apex student body further said enlarging the accused on bail within few days without even completing the requisite legal formalities has deeply disheartened the union.

ITANAGAR, May 10: Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today expressed shock over the devastating
fire mishap that gutted at least 60 houses in Boa-
Tuki, meanwhile, expressed serious concerns over repeated fire mishaps in the state and appealed the people to be cautious and adopt mandatory preventive measures. He said devastative fire accidents can only be prevented through awareness and personally taking preventive measures.
“The government or the administration cannot prevent fire until and unless each household and each individual voluntarily takes up preventive measures and remain vigilant against it,” he observed.
Parliamentary Secretary for Health & Family Welfare and Food & Civil Supplies, Nido Pavitra, who is also the local representative, too has expressed grave concern and shock over the fire mishap.
On the directions of Pavitra, who is currently out of the state on official programme, immediate relief materials like buckets, blankets, utensils and 50 kg of rice to each family of the victims were distributed. The Lower Subansiri district administration has also provided relief money of Rs 2700 to each of the affected 60 families.
According to an official report no household material including cash and ornaments could be saved as the accident took place at about 3 pm when people were out attending agricultural chores. However, there was no loss of human life.
All the victim families are being temporarily accommodated in places like the panchayat hall, community hall and local churches. The administration is assessing the damage and losses and would submit a detailed report after finalization.
In a statement today, Pavitra assured assistance to the victim families for their quick rehabilitation and appealed for patience and calm. He directed the district administration and the police to strictly monitor the relief operations and provide every possible assistance to the victims. On behalf of the district administration, Pavitra has also sought additional special package from the state government to rebuild houses for the victims.
Relief and Rehabilitation officials, meanwhile, are also assessing the loss incurred in the mishap. Official sources said that after a detailed assessment relief would be provided to the victims as per government norms.
According to Tado Raja, president, All Lower Subansiri Students’ Union (ALSSU), fire broke out at about 2.40 pm and burnt down all the ill fated houses within 20 minutes.
Unusual blowing of wind and bursting of three cooking gas cylinders spread the fire and gutted the houses within no time. Some of the houses could have been saved if wind did not support fury of the fire, said an eye witness.
Yowa Apo, a victim told that he was in his agriculture field when the fire broke out. On his return to the village in the evening, he found his house, motorcycle and other costly household items including a cash amount of Rs. 45000 reduced to ashes.
Nido Tagom, Development Chairman of 25th Raga S/T Assembly Constituency informed the victims that the local MLA will provide 20 pieces of CGI sheets to each family.
It was the most devastating fire accident ever occurred in Boasimla, said Tagom.
All Tei Temir Welfare Society (ATTWS), Kamporijo also distributed one blanket each to the victims as immediate relief.
Pegmir Topu, secretary of the Society said they have already issued circular to all the bamboo grove owners of the area to let the victims use their bamboos in reconstruction of their houses. The Society is also ready to extend physical help in reconstruction work, he added.

I am to clarify that the scheme for the building had been sanctioned to be constructed

The DC, Capital Complex Naharlagun has conveyed his inability to provide alternate plot. Seeing no further alternatives, the head of the department has requested the DC Papum Pare to allot suitable plot.
Accordingly a suitable land has been allotted in heart of Yupia, near the vicinity of DC office.

Dear Editor,
Opium cultivation and its trade are growing at an alarming rate and it is going to be disastrous for the entire state in the near future.
I have personally met the former Chief Minister of the state and also submitted a memorandum to your honour. Though a strong action was recommended by you and the Chief Minister of Arunachal, there has been no strong attempt, except some formalities of destroying poppies by the road sides because many of the leaders and their relatives are involved in this illegal opium cultivation and trade. Unfortunately, the police personnel in the state are infested by the opium addiction. Therefore the opium business transaction goes to thousands of kilos worth crores of rupees every year.
You may be well aware that the opium or Kani, known as black gold is being encouraged because of lack of will power of our Political leaders and I think it will spread to the other districts of Arunachal Pradesh in no time. As of now, more than 60% of the populations including women in Lohit are addicted.
Our govt. employees especially teachers working in remote rural areas are mostly tempted to opium addiction with the already growing addiction among the various sections of the society.

According to some misguided persons, opium cultivation and its business is the only viable alternative of earning cash for livelihood. But I don't think so, because many well to do families, employees, businessmen are also involved and so far there is no fear of any kind.
In my view, our districts are very resourceful naturally and people can opt for cash crop like cardamom, ginger, medicinal plant, horticulture, orange, tea, rubber plantation and piggery, poultry, dairy, vegetables farming.
In comparison to other district of Arunachal Pradesh we have sufficient plain land suitable for cultivation of many costly crops. Given the small size of local population of the district the resources available can easily feed the local populace.
And with the availability of natural resources including mines & minerals and forest industries there cannot be immediate unemployment if they are properly tapped.
In Lohit district, because of the opium & drug addiction crimes like extortion is increasing day by day among the youths and they are becoming sick members of our society. They are unable to contribute their valuable time for the social and other economic development activities.
It is my strong conviction that student organizations should be mobilized to organize awareness campaigns against the use of drugs. And they should be financed to visit the affected districts as soon as possible and provided with all facilities by the district administrations.
I would like to request for immediate action and in this regard the administration
should involve local leaders, NGOs, students community, youth force and women organizations
in particular to offer their services for Lohit & Anjaw Districts and the central
police force should be entrusted for execution of the laws. De-
I hope my plea would be seriously considered to save the present and future generation from a calamity of the worst kind. For if our human resources become paralyzed, then for whom is the much hyped economic development meant for?
The burning issue today is not erratic action by burning poppy fields now and then or speeches by our public leaders but the declaration of a comprehensive policy to root out the menace if real development of the state is contemplated.

We heartily appreciate the initiatives taken by Tourism Minister Pema Khandu and Parliamentary secretary, tourism, Pasang Dorjee Sona, who is also local MLA, for bringing first chartered flight at Mechuka as part of tourism promotion.
We expect more such initiatives from both these young leaders for tourism development in Mechuka and other tourist hot spots of the state.

During our recent visit to Mechuka subdivision, we could found that most of the officers and staff remained absent from their offices. They prefer to stay at district Hq Aalo and some other places. Local people complained that they have to wait for visit of officials, who hardly visit Mechuka twice or thrice in a month or have to go down to Aalo for any official works.

The higher echelons of IT companies are still disproportionately dominated by men.
Eighty one per cent of all the women knowledge workers are at the entry level and

Most women believe that men still call the shots in the IT industry but are appreciative of the support they get in these companies when working in gender diverse teams. A good 76 per cent of the women polled for the survey rated the support from their managements in the range of okay to excellent.
The survey shows that charting out clear growth maps leading all the way to the top
may in fact be a key retention factor for IT companies. Women who feel they are up
